A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national projects.
